Fuqiang ZHAO, a member of EST since January 2025, is grateful to have been awarded the EST Summer School Scholarship to support his participation in the 37th CETRA Research Summer School in Translation Studies, organised by the Centre for Translation Studies at KU Leuven, in Antwerp, Belgium, from 24 August to 4 September 2026. He is currently in the third year of his PhD in Translation Studies at the University of Bristol, having previously completed an MSc in Translation Studies with Distinction at the University of Edinburgh.
Supervised by Dr Carol O’Sullivan and Dr Shuangyi Li, his doctoral project, The Role of Paratexts in the Reception of English Translations of Jin Yong’s Wuxia Novels, examines how paratexts across print, e-book, audiobook, and comic-adaptation formats shape the way Anglophone readers encounter Jin Yong’s wuxia (martial arts) novels. Bringing paratextual theory into dialogue with empirical reception research, including reader review analysis and focus groups, the project seeks to extend a largely print-centred body of theory into an increasingly multiformat publishing landscape.
