Two highly deserving candidates – Martina Bruno and Tian Yang – have been awarded the EST Summer School Scholarships this year from a pool of strong applicants. We wish all of the applicants and the scholarship recipients rewarding experiences at TS summer and winter schools this year!
Martina Bruno |
Martina A. Bruno, a member of EST since June 2024, was thrilled to accept the EST Summer School scholarship for her participation at the 35th CETRA Research Summer School in Translation Studies, a summer school organised by the Centre for Translation Studies at KU Leuven, Campus Opera, Antwerp, Belgium from 19-30 August 2024. She is currently in the first year of her PhD in Interpreting, Translation and Intercultural Studies at Alma Mater Studiorum University of Bologna, jointly with University Paris 1 Panthéon-Sorbonne within the Una Europa Doctoral program in cultural heritage. Previously, she studied conference interpreting (Italian, English and French) at the Department of Interpreting and Translation (DIT) at Alma Mater Studiorum University of Bologna.
Her research project, with the working title Easy Language and Machine Translation in Museum Accessibility – Professional, Theoretical and Social Repercussions, is being supervised by Prof. Cristiana Cervini and Prof. Valeria Illuminati at the University of Bologna and Prof. Jean-Michel Tobelem at the University Paris 1 Panthéon-Sorbonne. The project aims to conduct a rigorous and multidimensional analysis of the multilingual communication practices implemented by different museums to find a balance between the evocative, symbolic and metaphorical language of art and linguistic accessibility, especially related to the principles of easy language. |
Tian Yang |
Tian Yang, a member of EST since June 2024, was excited to accept the EST Summer School scholarship for her participation in “35th CETRA Research Summer School in Translation Studies”, organized by KU Leuven, from 19-30 August 2024. She is currently in the second year of her PhD in Translation Studies at the Leiden University Center for Linguistics. She finished her master in Chongqing University, China in 2016 and has been working as a college English teacher for 7 years from 2016 to 2023. Her research project, How migrants use machine translation to overcome language barriers in healthcare-insights from migrants in the Netherlands , is being supervised by Dr. Susana Valdez. The aim of the project is to investigate how migrants use and perceive machine translation in healthcare. The findings of this research can not only inform migrants when and whether machine translation can be reliable in healthcare but also inform policymakers of migrants’ healthcare needs and the barriers to meeting their needs. Additionally, it can contribute to the development of domain-specific machine translation tools in healthcare. Her research consists of three studies that run through the whole healthcare-seeking process. Her first study explores migrant’s opinions about the use of machine translation in healthcare. Her second study will investigate how machine translation can facilitate the communication between GPs and migrants. In the end, she will explore the usability of machine translation in helping migrants understand post-hospital medical instructions. |
